Previously a cyclist, he switched to running in 1986 and success quickly followed. World-class over 5000m, for the 10000m, he made the Olympic final in 1988, in only his third year in the sport, captured the European title 10 yrs later in 1988 and added the European Record in 1999.With a Best time for the marathon of 2hrs 6min 36sec, which is an European Record for the distance, and six other Sub 2hrs 9min finishes, Pinto is one of the fastest and most consistent marathoners of all time. Married with one child, Pinto still works part-time on his family owned vineyard's outside Porto.
